The world’s 8600 or so species of birds are remarkable in their diversity, their mastery of flight, and their abilities as songsters, navigators, and builders. Sir Peter Scott has called them “the liveliest of living things”. Feathers distinguish birds from all other animals and are the most beautiful and remarkable of avian adaptions. My digital camera and lenses capture exquisite plumage details and aspects of flight and behavior you never see with the naked eye. All contribute to my fascination with birds and the challenges of bird photography.
Currently, 66 of the 450 species of birds which regularly raise their young or spend their non-breeding seasons in one or more of Canada's varied habitats are assessed as Endangered, Threatened, or of Special Concern. In 2012, BirdLife International concluded that 13% of the world's bird species are threatened with extinction. Birds are considered to be excellent indicators of biodiversity so this speaks loudly about the unhealthy state of life on planet Earth.
